ALOHA!
Astrology is one of the best educations that you could ever give yourself. Once learned it can be a continual source of hope, encouragement, direction and guidance for you. Your natal chart is written in code and if you can break the code you can read the many different potentials that are at your disposal. Each symbol has many special meanings, so it becomes a real life treasure hunt of self-discovery.
Learning Astrology takes as much effort as learning any other language. It takes determination, memorization, and practice, but the rewards far exceed the work! Memorization is UNFUN, but neccessary if you want to interpret a chart correctly. Remember when you were a kid in school learning to write your ABC’s? It was kind of fun, right? Well, look at learning Astrology the same way. Practice drawing (and redrawing) the symbols and their keywords and you’ll have them memorized in no time. If you’re the creative type, make some colorful flash cards and practice with a friend. This worked for me. Below are practice sheets as well as “tests” to see what needs further study. Working through each practice sheet and test–in order–will establish a strong base for you to start from.
If you are a beginner, one of the best ways to start is by memorizing ONE keyword for every planet, sign, house and aspect. This lays a firm foundation for you to add to later. It’s do-able and won’t over-whelm you as much as trying to remember EVERYTHING about each planet, sign and house. After you’ve mastered one keyword for each, adding additional keywords gets easier and easier. Skipping the memorization step will only delay your ability to “read” your chart accurately. So, roll up your sleeves and sharpen that pencil!
Below are PRACTICE SHEETS that you can copy, paste and resize into a word file for printing.
Print them out and practice drawing each symbol while saying each aloud.

After you have mastered ONE keyword for every planet, sign, house, and aspect, learn which planet and sign are associated with each house. This is very important to memorize, so you can interpret a chart correctly later. You’re doing great; keep going! Feel free to color in each house: Fire, Earth, Air, Water. If you are familiar with Tarot, notice the color association is a little different in Astrology than in Tarot.

CHART INTERPRETATION
The biggest problem these days–in regard to learning Astrology– is that there is too much information available, especially on the internet! One can easily be overwhelmed with confusion.
To help you “get it all straight in your head,” the following lessons are arranged in “IMPORTANCE” order. Meaning that the lessons listed first have the MOST influence over you and how your life is most likely to manifest. But, keep in mind you do have “Free-will” and can choose whether you express each of the energies in its POSITIVE form or its NEGATIVE form. Also, when viewing your chart don’t forget to acknowledge the ELEMENT and QUALITY/MODES. These alone can provide you with a wealth of information and direction.
LESSON 1: The Ascendant (or AC or Rising sign)
Of everything in your natal chart the Ascendant–or AC–has the most influence over the life of the person. Contrary to popular belief, 80% of the chart’s effect lies in the AC, not the Sun’s Sign. The diagram below describes the Ascendant’s power.
Your Ascendant shows how you approach life in general. It’s like a particular LENS that you view the world through and through that same lens the world sees you. This is why we have the saying, “perception is everything,” because it almost is everything–in regards to influencing you and your life.
Your Ascendant or Rising Sign determines:
- your mannerisms
- your sense of humor
- your appearance
- your facial expressions
- your style of expression in general
- the filter or doorway through which you may gain control of yourself
- your doorway to understanding reality
- where the question of your IDENTITY must be solved
- the major clue to your belief in God
- plays a very important role in the ways you fulfill out karmic destiny
All these things influence your life experiences in the most major way. Regardless of what else is going on in your chart, you will experience your relationship with life through the focused perceptions of your Ascendant.
Your Ascendant will ATTRACT things, people and events that are associated with that sign (and any planets within 10 degrees of your AC). Your Ascendant symbolizes the bridge, or meeting place, between your inner being and the events in life that you will experience. The AC is your point in consciousness. It manages and leads the rest of the chart to those experiences through which your inner being and the outer environment can relate to one another.
If you are using your Ascendant correctly, you will feel close to those experiences in life which are similar to the qualities of your Ascendant. This is what gives you a feeling of control over your life. At the same time, you will be able to experience a feeling of healthy distance from all those experiences in the environmnet which do not directly relate to your Ascendant. In this way the Ascendant magnetizes one’s consciousness, fixing it at points in time and space so it can make contact with all it needs to absorb from (and give to) universal consciousness without experiencing excess interference from vibrations, events, or circumstances which are basically off track and can be draining and confusing.
ASSIGNMENT:
1) Take SEVERAL WEEKS to read about, study and meditate on the MEANING of your Ascendant sign and its PURPOSE. To get your thoughts in order, take notes along the way. A special journal for this analysis is encouraged. Remember to note the meaning of the sign’s element and quality/mode. Much insight and clarity will be gained through this exercise. Stay FOCUSED on your Ascendant. Resist the temptation to explore other areas of your chart at this time.
2) If there are any planets within 10 degrees of your AC, then study and meditate on their basic nature and relate these planets to the sign that is associated with each of them. These planets will hugely impact how your AC operates, and in most cases the planet’s energy will over-power the Ascendant’s sign, especially if it is within 0-5 degrees from the AC. However, both the planet and the sign will mix together to form a unique AC. Remember to note the meaning of the sign’t element and quality/mode. Record these findings in your journal as well.
LESSON 2: The SUN
While the Ascendant (or rising sign) shows how the WORLD sees you, the SUN describes how you view YOURSELF. Your Sun sign represents how your inner will asserts itself and where you desire to shine. It is your ego, qualities of leadership and success. The Sun represents the masculine principle: the father, husband and men in general. It rules authority, bosses, rank, title, high office, progress, dignity, energy, sense of identity, and capacity for experience.
